Teaching About Washing Hands
Teaching kids how important it is to wash their hands is very vital!
A virus, such as coronaviruses and the flu, is encoded by RNA (a coat of fat and protein) so when the side of the soap molecule that is attracted to fat and protein inserts itself into the virus’s shell, the chemical bonds holding the virus together are broken apart
Activity 1:
WATCH to learn how to chase the "pepper" germs away!
This demonstration mimics how germs are removed from hands with soap.

You will need:
Water

3 cups
Flour
Liquid dish soap

A dish
Black pepper
Step 1
Cover the bottom of your shallow dish with water.

Step 2
Sprinkle black pepper across the surface of the water. Note how the surface tension of the water causes the pepper flakes float.
Step 3
Stick your finger in the center of the dish; did anything happen? Not much right? You probably just got some pepper flakes stuck to your finger. Now imagine that the pepper flakes are germs.
Step 4
Now dip the tip of your finger into the liquid dish soap—you don’t need much.

Step 5
Now stick that finger into the center of the dish. What happens? Your soapy finger chased those pepper flakes to the edges of the plate!

It wasn’t until you added soap to the bowl that those "germs" were chased away. This is the reason grown-ups are always nagging you to wash your hands with soap!
Activity 2:
You will need:
Flour

A dish

1½ cups
Butter

-
Put a little flour on hands

-
Have those kids shake hands with other kids, who should then shake hands with other kids, and so on.
-
After everyone has shaken hands with at least two people, ask them if they have flour on them.
